The New York Yankees announced Tuesday that they have invited LHP Tyler Matzek to 2025 Major League Spring Training.
Matzek, 34, has spent parts of six Major League seasons with the Colorado Rockies (2014-15) and Atlanta Braves (2020-22, ‘24), going 16-21 with one save, one complete game (one shutout) and a 3.72 ERA (285.1IP, 246H, 123R/118ER, 142BB, 272K, 21HR) in 168 career games (24 starts). The left-handed pitcher made 11 relief appearances with Atlanta in 2024, posting a 9.90 ERA (10.0IP, 16H, 11R/ER, 3BB, 10K, 3HR). He was acquired by the San Francisco Giants from Atlanta along with INF Sabin Ceballos in exchange for OF Jorge Soler and RHP Luke Jackson on July 29, 2024, and made five relief appearances with Triple-A Sacramento, posting a 5.79 ERA (4.2IP, 4H, 4R/3ER, 3BB, 3K, 2HR). He was then released by San Francisco on Aug. 30, 2024, and signed back with Atlanta to a Minor League contract on Aug. 31 and made four relief outings with Triple-A Gwinnett, going 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA (5.2IP, 5H, 3R/ER, 2BB, 5K, 1HR).
The Laguna Beach, Calif., native was originally selected by the Colorado Rockies in the first round (11th overall) of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. He signed with the Chicago White Sox as a Minor League free agent on Feb. 20, 2017, and was released by Chicago on March 29, 2018. He was then signed to a Minor League contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks on January 16, 2019, and was released by Arizona on May 16, 2019. Additionally, Matzek was signed to a two-year Minor League contract with the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 15, 2019, and then signed to a two-year Major League contract with Atlanta on Nov. 30, 2022.
