The New York Yankees today announced that they have signed RHP Lou Trivino to a one-year Major League contract for the 2024 season with a club option for the 2025 season.
Trivino, 32, missed the entire 2023 season after undergoing right elbow UCL reconstruction surgery on May 3, 2023. He was non-tendered a contract on November 17, 2023. In his last full season in 2022, he went 1-2 with one save and a 1.66 ERA (21.2IP, 18H, 6R/4ER, 10BB, 22K, 1HR) in 25 relief appearances with the Yankees. Trivino began the 2022 season with the Oakland Athletics, going 1-6 with 10 saves and a 6.47 ERA (32.0IP, 46H, 25R/23ER, 14BB, 45K, 5HR) in 39 relief appearances.
Over five Major League seasons with Oakland (2018-22) and the Yankees (2022), Trivino has gone 21-25 with 37 saves and a 3.86 ERA (284.2IP, 252H, 137R/122ER, 130BB, 299K, 29HR) over 285 career appearances (one start). Throughout his Major League career, he has held right-handed batters to a .210 batting average, .299 on-base percentage and .312 slugging percentage (699BF). Since his Major League debut in 2018, he ranks second among AL relief pitchers (sixth in Majors) in inherited runners scored percentage over that span (27.7).
In nine career postseason appearances (four with the Yankees), he has a 0.96 ERA (9.1IP, 4H, 1R/1ER, 3BB, 10K, 1HR) without a decision, appearing in the 2018 Wild Card game at the Yankees, the 2020 Wild Card Series against Chicago-AL, the 2020 ALDS against Houston, the 2022 ALDS against Cleveland and the 2022 ALCS against Houston.
The Sellersville, Pa., native was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 11th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft from Slippery Rock University (Pa.). He was acquired by the Yankees from Oakland along with RHP Frankie Montas in exchange for LHP JP Sears, INF Cooper Bowman, RHP Luis Medina and LHP Ken Waldichuk on August 1, 2022.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have placed OF Jasson Domínguez on the 60-day injured list (recovering from “Tommy John” reconstruction surgery).
