Elijah Dunham, a non-drafted free agent outfielder from Indiana University became one of the latest players added to the Yankees organization this week, roughly a week after the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft took place.
The 22-year-old lefty-hitting junior played in 15 games for the Hoosiers before his collegiate season was interrupted in 2020, but in that timeframe he slashed an eye-popping .390/.493/.559 with 11 RBI and a team-high seven doubles.
“I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity of being a Yankee,” Dunham told reporters about his decision to turn pro.
"It's time for me to take my opportunity and bet on myself. I'm extremely confident in my abilities and know the Yankees can continue to develop them at the highest level," Dunham announced in a personal Twitter post.
"It's time to get to work."
In 94 games over parts of three college seasons at IU, Dunham compiled a slash line of .312/.429/.496 with 25 doubles, nine homers and 48 RBI.
By rule, all non-drafted players can earn a signing bonus capped at $20,000. Dunham is the sixth non-drafted free agent acquired by the Yankees this year, following a quintet of right-handed pitchers:
Carson Coleman - University of Kentucky
Ocean Gabonia - Everett College
Trevor Holloway - University of Central Florida
Jarod Lessar - Brigham Young University
Connor Pellerin - Tulane University
