Pinstriped Pulse
The 37-18 Yankees hold the best record in the American League and lead second-place Baltimore by 1.5 games in the AL East, a division that looks like a two-team race as June approaches, with Boston, Toronto and Tampa Bay all 9.5 games back or worse. Anthony Volpe is batting .333 during a 19-game hitting streak, the longest in the Majors this year and the longest by a Yankee since the start of the 2013 season. Aaron Judge leads MLB with a 1.039 OPS, and he recently went through a stretch in which he became he first big leaguer in history to record 12 doubles and 11 home runs in a 20-game span. Fifth in the Majors with a .979 OPS, Juan Soto is batting .310 with 14 homers and 44 RBI. Though it ended during his last start, Clarke Schmidt recently threw 24.1 consecutive scoreless innings on the road, the longest streak by a Yankee since Hall of Famer Mike Mussina in 2003.

How ‘Bout That
The Yankees’ rotation has been on the kind of run rarely seen in baseball! Over their last 14 games, all of their starting pitchers have gone at least five innings while giving up two runs or fewer, tying them with three other teams for the longest streak in MLB going all the way back to 1893, when the pitching mound was moved 60 feet, six inches away from home plate. The only other clubs to put together runs like that have been the 1907 Phillies, the 1968 Pirates and the 2022 Mets.

Know The Foe
At 20-33, the Angels have the second-worst record in the AL, better than only the 15-40 White Sox. Last place in their division, the Halos are eight games behind the West-leading Mariners and nine games out of Wild Card position. As the team plays with several key players out due to injuries including Mike Trout (left knee surgery) and Anthony Rendon (left hamstring strain), Taylor Ward leads the team with 11 home runs and 32 RBI while also batting .274. Jo Adell, with 10 homers, is the only other active Angel in double figures. Kevin Pillar is batting .407 over 54 at-bats with the Angels since joining the team after he was designated for assignment by the White Sox, cleared waivers and chose to become a free agent instead of accepting an outright assignment to the Triple-A level. Luis Rengifo is batting .369 since April 18. After being limited to 49 games last year due to left shoulder surgery, Long Island native Logan O’Hoppe has a .266 average and 12 extra-base hits this season. The Angels’ bullpen ERA is 4.81, fourth-worst in the Majors, and they are one of five teams with at least 26 home runs allowed by relievers.

Probable Pitchers
Having thrown 12.0 innings over his previous two starts without giving up an earned run, Nestor Cortes will try to stay hot tonight when he takes the mound opposite Griffin Canning. Luis Gil and Tyler Anderson are lined up for tomorrow, both pitchers ranking within the AL’s top eight in ERA. Gil ranks fifth with a mark of 2.11 while Anderson is eighth at 2.52, percentage points ahead of Schmidt. Gil is going to try for his sixth consecutive winning start, and Carlos Rodón will try to make it five in a row when he works the series finale against Patrick Sandoval.
Looking Ahead to the Dodgers
After their current California road trip is complete, the Yankees will host a team from the Golden State on their next homestand when Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and the Dodgers make the trip to the Bronx for three huge games! With so many big names on each side including a handful of players who could wind up in the Hall of Fame down the road, you won’t want to miss any of the action. YES & the YES App are going to have special coverage of the series opener Friday, June 7 starting at 6:00 p.m. with a one-hour Pregame Show from the Stadium.
