New York Yankees claim INF Braden Shewmake off waivers

The Yankees claimed INF Braden Shewmake off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.

Shewmake, 27, batted .125 (8-for-64) with 4R, 2 doubles, 1HR, 4RBI, 1BB and 5SB in 29 games with the Chicago White Sox in 2024. He appeared defensively for Chicago-AL at shortstop (11G/8GS), third base (8G/7GS) and second base (6GS). Shewmake also played in 10 games with Triple-A Charlotte, where he hit .152 (5-for-33) with 2R, one double and 2RBI in 10 games.

Shewmake made his Major League debut in 2023, playing in two games for the Atlanta Braves. Over parts of five Minor League seasons in the Braves (2019, ’21-23) and White Sox (2024) organizations, Shewmake has batted .248 (336-for-1,356) with 202R, 75 doubles, 10 triples, 38HR, 176RBI, 104BB and 53SB in 356 games.

The Wylie, Tex., native was originally selected in the first round (21st overall) by Atlanta of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Texas A&M University. Shewmake was acquired by Chicago-AL from Atlanta along with RHP Riley Gowens, INF Nicky Lopez, RHP Michael Soroka and LHP Jared Shuster in exchange for LHP Aaron Bummer on Nov. 16, 2023. He was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Jan. 1, 2025. Shewmake was claimed off waivers by the Royals on Jan. 8, 2025 and was then designated for assignment by Kansas City on Feb. 2, 2025
