Pinstriped Pulse

Having won seven of their last eight games, the 67-46 Yankees sit atop the AL East, a half-game ahead of Baltimore. Aaron Judge is batting .322 while leading MLB in homers (41), RBI (103) and OPS (1.157). He’s also batting .423 since the All-Star break, and Juan Soto is batting .393 in that same span. Anthony Volpe has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games, during which he’s batting .353 with five home runs. Jazz Chisholm Jr. has a .300 average in seven games since joining the Yanks. Fellow trade deadline acquisitions Mark Leiter Jr. and Enyel De Los Santos have combined to make six appearances out of the Yanks’ bullpen.

How ‘Bout That

It seems like the exploits of Aaron Judge are placing him in the company of icons like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle on a daily basis, doesn’t it? Judge moved alongside Ruth in yet another category on Saturday when he homered in the first inning of the Yankees’ 8-3 win over Toronto. The captain’s two-run drive was his 16th first-inning homer of the year, tying the single-season franchise record Ruth set in his legendary 1927 campaign. Judge is also two away from the MLB record Alex Rodriguez set with the 2001 Rangers.

Know The Foes

The 49-63 Angels enter the Bronx coming off a series win over the Mets, although they were sellers at the trade deadline as they sent closer Carlos Estévez to Philadelphia and dealt another reliever, Luis García, to Boston. Having been out since late April due to a torn meniscus in his left knee that required surgery, Mike Trout was recently ruled out for the season after an MRI revealed another tear in that same knee. The three-time MVP has played in just 44.5 percent of the Angels’ games since the start of 2021, appearing in 266 out of a possible 598. At 54-60, the reigning World Champion Rangers are five games behind first-place Seattle in the AL West. Corey Seager is batting .370 with six home runs over his last 13 games, including five home runs in his last five. On Tuesday, Seager hit a two-run homer against Houston in the bottom of the ninth inning, breaking up a bid for a no-hitter by Framber Valdez when the Astros lefty was one out away. Starting pitcher and former Yankee Nathan Eovaldi recently went a franchise-record 43.1 consecutive innings without walking a batter.

Probable Starters

Luis Gil gets the call for the Yankees in Game 1 this afternoon against an Angels team he saw out west on May 29, when he threw eight innings of one-run ball. Will Warren is going to start Game 2 and will make his second MLB start after he threw 5.1 innings July 30 in Philadelphia, where he was a late substitution for Gerrit Cole and helped the Yanks defeat the Phillies 7-6 in extras.

Bronx Buds

For the first time ever, an animated series is coming to YES: HexClad presents Bronx Buds! The show, which is also brought to you by Bical Auto Mall, premieres Aug. 17 on the YES App, where you can check out quick profiles of Riv, Bash and Oscar right now.

Yankees News & Views: Eli Manning

Before he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, Eli Manning was a guest on the latest edition of “Yankees News & Views” with Jack Curry. The two-time Super Bowl MVP reflected on his 16 years playing for the Giants, plus he also talked about the impact baseball had on his upbringing, the Manningcast and much more. You can watch their conversation exclusively on the YES App, or you can listen to an audio-only edition on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
