The New York Yankees are set to play their second of three doubleheaders this week on Friday as they battle the crosstown rival New York Mets for the first Subway Series match-up of 2020.
The two clubs were scheduled to face each other last weekend before the Mets were confronted with two positive COVID-19 cases in the organization, prompting Major League Baseball to postpone the series until this upcoming weekend.
Jordan Montgomery will take the mound for the Yankees in the first game of Friday's doubleheader, after pitching well against the Mets in a previous exhibition match-up earlier this year. The young left-hander tossed five scoreless innings and struck out six in a 6-0 shutout against the Mets on July 19 prior to the official start of the regular season.
Montgomery has looked to maintain his aggressiveness on the mound after notching his second victory of the year against the Braves on August 11, when he struck out four over six strong innings in a 9-6 Yankees victory.
While both games Friday will be held in the Bronx, the Yankees will be the designated home team for the first half of the doubleheader, and the Mets will take over as the home team for the second.
Luke Voit - current owner of the highest OPS in baseball at 1.096 - has hits in 11 of his last 12 games, over which span he's slugged seven home runs and collected 14 RBI. The 29-year-old first baseman has been a consistent force in the heart of the Yankees lineup this season, even serving as a leadoff hitter at one point.
While the Bombers may enter the weekend series without hard-hitting Aaron Judge, who exited Wednesday's second game with calf tightness, the team will hope to continue its historic success against the Mets after the two teams' first meeting in 1997.
Since that first Subway Series match-up more than two decades ago, the Yankees have compiled a 71-51 record against the Mets (excluding World Series play) and will be hoping to bounce back following a five-game skid.
