Facts and figures: The complete history of the Yankees-Mets Subway Series rivalry

The 2020 version of the Subway Series kicks off this weekend when the New York Yankees make the trip to Citi Field to take on the Mets. Over the course of the crosstown rivalry, there have been many memorable moments and even more notable facts, figures and stats.

Here are some of our favorites:

139 players played for both the Yankees and Mets

Marv Throneberry became the first to play for both teams when the former Yankee made his Mets debut on May 11, 1962. Chasen Shreve became the most recent to play for both teams when he pitched for the Mets for the first time on July 27. Other notable names to wear both jerseys include:

  • Bobby Abreu: (Yankees: 2006-08; Mets: 2014)
  • Sandy Alomar: (Yankees: 1974-76; Mets: 1967)
  • Carlos Beltran: (Yankees: 2014-16; Mets: 2005-11)
  • Armando Benítez: (Yankees: 2003); Mets: 1999-2003)
  • Yogi Berra: (Yankees: 1946-63; Mets: 1965)
  • Dellin Betances: (Yankees: 2011, 2013-19; Mets: 2020)
  • Robinson Cano: (Yankees: 2005-13; Mets: 2019-20)
  • David Cone: (Yankees: 1995-2000; Mets: 1987-1992, 2003)

Yogi Berra

  • Yankees: 1964, 1984-1985

Dallas Green

  • Yankees: 1989
  • Mets: 1993-1996

Joe Torre

  • Mets: 1977-1981
  • Yankees 1996-2007

Only one player has hit 90+ home runs for both teams

Curtis Granderson clubbed 115 long balls for the Yankees, then went on to hit 95 for the Mets (regular season).

Only one pitcher has 60+ wins for both teams

David Cone registered 81 wins in a Mets uniform and 64 wins while playing for the Yankees.

Subway Series shutouts

Dave Mlicki threw a complete game shutout against the Yankees in the very first Subway Series game June 16, 1997. No Met pitcher has had one against the Yankees since. In fact, no Mets pitcher has had a complete game victory against the Yankees since.

On the flip side, the Yankees have had two pitchers throw shutouts against the Mets: Andy Pettitte (6/30/02) and Masahiro Tanaka (5/14/14)

Overall

The Yankees lead the overall Subway Series with a 71-51 record (not counting the World Series). Besides losing the very first game of the Subway Series (see above), they have never trailed in this series.

Grand slams

Mike Piazza hit the first grand slam in the Subway Series June 9, 2000 off Roger Clemens.

Hideki Matsui had the first Yankees grand slam (6/28/2003) and then hit the second one nearly a year to the day (6/27/2004).

Offensive records

Not surprisingly, Derek Jeter still holds just about every offensive record for the Yankees in the Subway Series. He’s played in the most games (88). Jorge Posada is next with 66.
