The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired RHP Cody Morris from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for OF Estevan Florial.
Morris, 27, posted a 6.75 ERA (8.0IP, 10H, 6ER, 6BB, 9K, 3HR) in six relief appearances with the Guardians in 2023. He also made 21 combined appearances (four starts) with Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, going 2-1 with a 3.23 ERA (39.0IP, 22H, 15R/14ER, 27BB, 45K, 5HR). Over two Major League seasons with Cleveland (2022-23), the right-handed pitcher has gone 1-2 with a 3.41 ERA (31.2IP, 31H, 14R/12ER, 18BB, 32K, 6HR) in 13 career appearances (five starts).
The Columbia, Md., native was drafted by Cleveland in the seventh round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of South Carolina. He was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 32nd round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft but did not sign.
Florial, 26, hit .230 (14-for-61) with 5R, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 8RBI, 7BB and 3SB in 19 games with the Yankees in 2023. He spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, batting .284 (116-for-409) with 83R, 23 doubles, 4 triples, 28HR, 79RBI, 66BB and 25SB in 101 games. Over parts of four Major League seasons with the Yankees (2020-23), the left-handed batter has hit .209 (24-for-115) with 12R, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 1HR, 11RBI, 15BB and 6SB in 48 career games. The Barahona, D.R., native was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on March 19, 2015.
