Spring Training is nearly here as the New York Yankees get set to kick off another season when pitchers and catchers report to camp in Tampa, Florida, on Feb. 15.
Several players have already made their way down to the Sunshine State to get a head-start on things, but there’s sure to be a number of new faces joining the team as non-roster invites and 2021 hopefuls looking for an opportunity in the Bronx.
One aspect of the roster the Yankees may look to add some depth is with left-handed hitters. As MLB.com’s Mike Petriello recently illuminated, the Yankees had the fewest lefty plate appearances in baseball last year, but they still were the fourth-most productive offense in terms of scoring runs.
Lineup balance becomes even more important when the postseason arrives, so let’s take a look at some options the Yankees could consider before the 2021 season gets underway.
Marwin Gonzalez, 31 years old – INF/OF (Bats: S)
2020 Stats (53 G): .211 BA, .286 OBP, .320 SLG, 15 R, 4 2B, 5 HR, 22 RBI
The market for this switch-hitting veteran is heating up this week according to reports, and though he struggled with the Twins during the 2020 season, he’s still a versatile veteran player that could play a number of roles for the Yankees should they decide to take a closer look.
Jonathan Villar, 29 years old – INF (Bats: S)
2020 Stats (52 G): .232 BA, .301 OBP, .292 SLG, 13 R, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 16 SB
Despite his modest upside as an offensive contributor, Villar offers a useful combination of infield versatility and speed -- two things that could greatly benefit the Yankees lineup -- and he would likely come at a reasonable price with an estimated market value of roughly $2.7 million, according to Spotrac.
Travis Shaw, 30 years old – INF (Bats: L)
2020 Stats (50 G): .239 BA, .306 OBP, .411 SLG, 17 R, 10 2B, 6 HR, 17 RBI
This former Red Sox draftee has had his share of ups and downs over six MLB seasons, but showed a major step forward from 2019 to 2020 as he drove in 17 runs with an OPS of .717 last season in Toronto. Before a major drop-off in his final season as a Brewer in 2019, Shaw bashed 63 home runs over a two-year stretch from 2017-18 and will hope to unlock that immense power with his next MLB opportunity.
Brad Miller, 31 years old – INF (Bats: L)
2020 Stats (48 G): .232 BA, .357 OBP, .451 SLG, 21 R, 8 2B, 7 HR, 25 RBI
Last season was one of the best of Miller’s career, which has seen him spend time with six different organizations across eight years in the Majors. Miller has played at almost every position on the diamond at one point or another and has shown major improvements at the plate in each of his last two seasons. With previous AL East experience also on his résumé, he could be a perfect candidate to consider for the Bombers.
Brett Gardner, 37 years old – OF (Bats: L)
2020 Stats (49 G): .223 BA, .354 OBP, .392 SLG, 20 R, 5 2B, 5 HR, 15 RBI
Perhaps the most seamless roster addition New York could make would be to bring back the Yankee lifer Gardner, who has remained an effective two-way player into his late-30s after 13 MLB seasons. The Yankees have plenty of competition in the outfield entering 2021, but Brian Cashman recently shed light on where the Yankees stood regarding Gardner’s tenure in the Bronx: “I’m not saying it’s going to continue, I’m not going to say it’s over, but he’s still on the board and we are always trying to figure out a way to make ourselves better. Time will tell if we can continue going on our journey together or not.”
