2014: Alfonso Soriano: Dual league threat
Alfonso Soriano becomes only the seventh player in big league history to collect 1,000 hits in both leagues when he singles off Bartolo Colon of the Mets in the bottom of the second inning of the Yankees' 9-7 loss at Yankee Stadium.
2004: Jeter with a towering shot vs. the O’s
With two out and two on in the bottom of the 8th and the score tied at five, Derek Jeter takes O’s reliever Josh Towers deep for the three-run, go-ahead homer. The Yankees win, 8-5.
1996: Eight was not enough for the White Sox
Trailing 8-0 after two innings, the Yankees respond with nine unanswered runs (two in the 4th, two in the 5th and five in 6th) to pull out a Mother’s Day win at Chicago’s Comiskey Park. Joe Girardi hits a bases-clearing double in the sixth to give the Yankees the lead.
1994: Bernie being Bernie
After a three-run, 9th inning rally by the Indians ties the game and the contest goes to extra innings, Bernie Williams hits a bases-loaded single to right off former teammate Steve Farr for the walk-off win in the 10th inning. It was Bernie’s first-ever walk-off hit.
1978: A Royal headache in KC
With two outs, a runner on first and the Yankees up, 3-2, in the bottom of the 9th, Amos Otis hits a fly ball to right-center. Paul Blair and Reggie Jackson collide and Otis races around the bases for an inside-the-park, walk-off homer.
1959: The streak was over when it ended
At Yankee Stadium, Yogi Berra's errorless streak of 148 games comes to an end when he overthrows second base trying to catch Minnie Minoso stealing in the 5th inning.
1953: The Chairman blanks the Tribe
Whitey Ford throws a one-hit complete game shutout against the Indians at Yankee Stadium. The only hit he allowed was to Cleveland pitcher Early Wynn (a 6th inning single) as the Yankees win, 7-0. In his first five games, Ford is 3-0 with an ERA of 0.95.
1925: A Legend is born
Hall of Famer Yogi Berra was born in St. Louis, Missouri. A World War II veteran who fought in Normandy during D-Day, Berra’s accomplishments as a player include 10 World Championships, three AL MVP Awards, and 18 All-Star nods. Berra is also the only manager to lead the Yankees (1964) and Mets (1973) to the World Series.
1923: Round number alert!
Babe Ruth hits the 200th home run of his career. It comes in the 6th inning off Detroit’s Herman Pillette at Navin Field. It also ties the game at two and the Yankees would go on to win, 3-2.
