Pinstriped Pulse

The 56-39 Yankees head into Baltimore within 2.0 games of the Orioles for first place in the American League East. This final series prior to the All-Star break will be the third between the Yanks and O’s in regular season play – they’ll have one more, a three-game set in the Bronx from Sept. 24-26. Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Clay Holmes will head to Arlington afterwards for this year’s Midsummer Classic. DJ LeMahieu has three multi-hit games over his last eight starts. Trent Grisham has 16 hits since June 6, with eight of them going for extra bases. Since his current stint with the Yankees began, Jake Cousins has allowed two hits and struck out 13 batters in 7.2 innings.

How ‘Bout That

Ben Rice has kept his momentum going following his three-homer, seven-RBI game last Saturday! He’s driven in four more runs since then, giving him a total of 16 RBI through the first 21 games of his MLB career. He’s one of just eight players in Yankees history to have at least 16 RBI though their first 21 games in the Majors, placing him in a group that includes the beloved Hideki Matsui (20) and two of the franchises’ greatest legends, Mickey Mantle (17) and Joe DiMaggio (21, the club record).

Know The Foe

Baltimore enters this series after being swept by the Cubs in a three-game set, although the Orioles did win eight of their previous 11 games. Gunnar Henderson, who will compete in the Home Run Derby during All-Star festivities, is putting together a big season with a .288 batting average, 27 homers, 61 RBI and 14 stolen bases. Anthony Santander’s 23 homers rank second on the team – he was just named Thursday as an All-Star replacement, so he’ll head to Globe Life Field as part of an Orioles contingent that also includes Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Jordan Westburg and Corbin Burnes. Henderson is one of three players on the team with double-digit steals, along with Cedric Mullins (16) and Jorge Mateo (13). Closer Craig Kimbrel has a 2.10 ERA this season, but in his career against the Yankees including the postseason, Kimbrel has an ERA of 5.06 in 27 appearances including a blown save on June 19.

Probable Starters

Gerrit Cole will start tonight’s opener opposite Cade Povich, who was charged with eight runs while getting only three outs in his last start Saturday in Oakland. Luis Gil starts tomorrow against Grayson Rodriguez. Carlos Rodón and Dean Kremer are scheduled to work Sunday on MLB’s final day of action prior to the All-Star break.
