Pinstriped Pulse

Following a winning homestand against the Twins and Dodgers, the Yankees are starting a seven-game road trip this evening with the first of four in Kansas City. Afterwards, they’ll head to Fenway Park for three games this weekend against the Red Sox. At 46-21, the Yanks have the best record in the American League and own a lead of 2.5 games atop the AL East over second-place Baltimore. Aaron Judge leads MLB in a host of categories including homers (24), walks (55) and OPS (1.139). While Anthony Volpe’s 34-game on-base streak ended last night, Judge’s streak grew to 35, the second-longest of his career. Judge’s only run longer was a 45-game streak bridging the end of his historic 2022 season and the beginning of 2023. Trent Grisham has homered twice in his last four games. Prior to Sunday’s game, Dennis Santana was designated for assignment and Ron Marinaccio was recalled from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre. Gerrit Cole made his second rehab start yesterday, throwing 57 pitches for Double-A Somerset. Juan Soto has missed the Yanks’ last three games due to left forearm inflammation.

How ‘Bout That

Even though it did not continue against the Dodgers last night, Luis Gil recently put together one of the most impressive streaks by a rookie pitcher in MLB history! From May 1-June 4, Gil went seven consecutive starts of at least six innings and no more than one run allowed, matching Los Angeles’ own Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 and Harry Krause of the 1909 Philadelphia Athletics for the second-longest streak ever. The only one longer? An eight-game stretch by Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson with the 1901 New York Giants.

Know The Foe

The 39-27 Royals are currently in Wild Card position and trail the first-place Guardians by four games in the AL Central. Bobby Witt Jr. leads the AL with a .320 batting average, two points ahead of second-place Soto, and his 34 extra-base hits rank him second behind the 46 of Judge. With 19 stolen bases, Witt is one of three Royals in double figures, along with Maikel Garcia (15) and Dairon Blanco (13). Salvador Perez is batting .299 with 10 home runs, 15 doubles and 42 RBI. A .242 hitter over the first six seasons of his MLB career with Colorado and Miami, Garrett Hampson is batting .321 in 78 at-bats during his first year with the Royals. Closer James McArthur has allowed 12 earned runs over his last 13 appearances and blown three of eight save opportunities during that time, although the Royals’ bullpen overall has an ERA of 2.96 this month.

Probable Pitchers

Carlos Rodón will try to win his seventh consecutive start in the series opener when he takes the ball opposite Seth Lugo, who ranks fourth in the AL with a 2.13 ERA – right behind the 2.04 mark of Gil - and is aiming to become its first 10-game winner. Marcus Stroman is scheduled to work tomorrow against Brady Singer. Kansas City has not announced its starter for Wednesday’s game, which will feature Cody Poteet starting for the Yankees. Poteet was in the Royals organization last year, having signed with them in December of 2022 while he was recovering from Tommy John surgery. He was released after making it back for one Minor League game in 2023, opening the door for him to sign with the Yankees shortly thereafter. Nestor Cortes and Alec Marsh are lined up for Thursday’s finale.
