How ‘Bout That

As May comes to a close, a trio of Yankees are finishing prolific months. Luis Gil posted an ERA of 0.70 in May, the third-best ever for a Yanks pitcher in any month behind only Hiroki Kuroda’s 0.55 in July 2013 and YES’ own David Cone with a 0.69 ERA in July 1999, which included his perfect game against Montreal. Aaron Judge enters May’s final game with 24 extra-base hits this month, tied with Babe Ruth in 1928 and Lou Gehrig in 1927 for the most ever by a Yankee in May. Anthony Volpe’s 21-game hitting streak, which ended last night, matched a 21-game streak by Joe DiMaggio in 1937 for the second-longest ever by a Yankee age 23 or younger…trailing only a separate 22-game streak by DiMaggio during that same ’37 season.

Pinstriped Pulse

The 39-19 Yankees hold the best record in the American League and lead second-place Baltimore by 2.0 games in the AL East. Alex Verdugo is batting .326 during an 11-game hitting streak. Juan Soto leads the AL with a .415 on-base percentage, and he is the only player in the league to have minimums of a .312 batting average, 15 home runs and 49 RBI at this point of the season. DJ LeMahieu made starts at first base and third base during the Yankees’ last series in Anaheim, his first series of the year upon returning from injury. Judge, who is second in AL OBP behind Soto at .403, hit his 275th career homer on Thursday, tying him with Jorge Posada for eighth place on the Yanks’ all-time list. His drive helped Carlos Rodón win his fifth consecutive start, a stretch in which Rodón has posted a 2.37 ERA. Prior to that game, the Yankees placed Clarke Schmidt on the injured list with a right lat strain. On Sunday, MLB will commemorate the fourth annual Lou Gehrig Day, which is going to include efforts to raise funds and awareness for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Know The Foe

The Giants have won 10 of their last 13 games, but even though they are one game over .500 for the season at 29-28, they still trail the first-place Dodgers by 6.5 games in the National League West. Matt Chapman and former Yankee Thairo Estrada are tied for the team lead in home runs with eight each; Estrada also leads the club with 31 RBI. Among active players with at least 100 at-bats, Patrick Bailey has the squad’s highest batting average at .299. LaMonte Wade Jr. was leading the way at .333, but he recently went on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. Other key Giants on the shelf right now include Michael Conforto, Jung Hoo Lee, Robbie Ray, Alex Cobb and Tom Murphy. Brett Wisely is batting .500 over his last six games, going 10-for-20.

Probable Pitchers

Having allowed just one run in 19.1 innings over his last three starts, Marcus Stroman will try to keep rolling this evening when he starts opposite flamethrower Jordan Hicks, who has excelled as a starter with the Giants after almost exclusively being used as a reliever during his previous five seasons with St. Louis and Toronto. Hicks’ 2.33 ERA ranks seventh in the National League, one spot ahead of the 2.74 mark held by his teammate Logan Webb, who is going to face the Yankees tomorrow. The Yanks will counter with Cody Poteet – he’ll come up from the Minors to start in place of Schmidt. Sunday’s finale will feature Nestor Cortes and Blake Snell. A mid-March signing in free agency, the two-time Cy Young Award-winning Snell, who claimed last year’s NL honor with San Diego, has an ERA of 10.42 through his first five starts with the Giants, the worst in the Majors among pitchers who’ve worked at least 19.0 innings this year.

Looking Ahead to the Dodgers

After their current California road trip is complete, the Yankees will host a team from the Golden State on their next homestand when Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and the Dodgers make the trip to the Bronx for three huge games! With so many big names on each side including a handful of players who could wind up in the Hall of Fame down the road, you won’t want to miss any of the action. YES & the YES App will have special coverage of the series opener next Friday, June 7, starting at 6:00 p.m. with a one-hour Pregame Show from the Stadium.
