Yankees trade for Rougned Odor from Rangers

The Yankees have acquired infielder Rougned Odor from the Rangers.

The New York Yankees announced Tuesday that they have acquired INF Rougned Odor (pronounced ROOG-ned oh-DORE) and cash considerations from the Texas Rangers in exchange for Minor League outfielders Antonio Cabello and Josh Stowers.

Odor, 27, has hit .237 (749-for-3,158) with 429 R, 146 doubles, 26 triples, 146 HR and 458 RBI in 858 games over parts of seven Major League seasons, all with Texas (2014-20). With 33 HR in 2016, 30 HR in 2017 and 30 HR in 2019, he is the sixth second baseman (min. 50.0% of games at second base) in Major League history with at least three seasons of 30-or-more home runs (also Dan Uggla, five; Chase Utley, three; Alfonso Soriano, three; Jeff Kent, three and Rogers Hornsby, three). He is the only second baseman to record multiple such seasons prior to his age-26 season and only Joe Gordon (1940), Jonathan Schoop (2017), Javier Báez (2018) and Ketel Marte (2019) reached the plateau once prior to turning 26.

In his career, Odor has appeared solely at second base, posting a .975 fielding percentage (95 errors, 3,816 total chances) at the position.

In 2020, he hit .167 (23-for-138) with 15 R, 4 doubles, 10 HR and 30 RBI in 38 games with the Rangers, reaching the 10 HR plateau for the sixth consecutive season.

The Maracaibo, Venezuela, native was originally signed by Texas as a non-drafted free agent on January 3, 2011. He was designated for assignment by the Rangers on April 1.

Cabello, 20, has hit .251 (97-for-386) with 57 R, 19 doubles, 9 triples, 8 HR, 40 RBI, 46 BB and 15 SB in 102 games over two Minor League seasons (2018-19). He did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, native was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent December 22, 2017.

Stowers, 24, has hit .268 (157-for-585) with 93 R, 39 doubles, 2 triples, 12 HR, 68 RBI, 101 BB and 55 SB over two Minor League seasons (2018-19). The Berwyn, Ill., native did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was originally selected by the Mariners in the second round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft before being traded to the Yankees in exchange for INF Shed Long on January 21, 2019.

A corresponding 40-man roster move will be made later today.
