Leading up to Christmas, we're counting down each day with the best players to wear numbers 1-25 for the Yankees. The list includes Hall of Famers, recent stars, title-winning managers and fan favorites that have donned pinstripes over the last 115 years.
Let's continue with No. 12, Wade Boggs and others
Over the course of the Yankees' storied history, multiple strong players have worn No. 12 in pinstripes. The most productive player to wear the jersey is Hall-of-Famer Wade Boggs. Other notable names such as Roger Clemens, Herb Pennock, Alfonso Soriano, Gil McDougald, Ron Blomberg and Ivan Rodriguez have worn the number throughout their careers.
Boggs spent five seasons with the Yankees, batting .313/.396/.407 with 702 hits and winning a World Series in 1996. He was an All-Star in four of his five seasons with the Yankees and won two Silver Slugger Awards and two Gold Glove Awards. His Gold Glove at 36 years old made him the oldest non-pitcher to win the award. One of Boggs' most memorable moments came after the Yankees won the World Series in 1996, and he rode an NYPD horse along the warning track.
Before coming to the Yankees, Boggs spent 11 seasons with the Red Sox where he was named to eight All-Star Games and won six Silver Slugger Awards. He finished his career with two seasons with the Devil Rays before retiring after the 1999 season. Boggs picked up 3,010 hits over his career, which is currently the 30th most of all-time. He was elected to the Hall of Fame alongside Ryne Sandberg in 2005.
Another popular No. 12 was Gil McDougald, who batted .276/.356/.410 over 10 seasons with the Yankees. McDougald won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1951 and was a six-time All-Star. During his tenure with the Yankees, McDougald was part of eight pennant-winning teams and five World Series championship teams.
McDougald became the first rookie to hit a home run in the World Series when he did so in 1951. He also led all American League infielders in double plays at third base, second base and shortstop during his career.
Other notable Yankees to wear No. 12:
