That is, until now.

This season, from August 25-27, MLB will be rolling out a new opportunity for players to show off their individual personality by allowing them to sport nicknames on the backs of their jerseys for the duration of this year's inaugural Players Weekend.

The Yankees will be partaking in the festivities as well, as they host the Seattle Mariners during those three days in the Bronx.

Per ESPN's Darren Rovell, at least four Yankees nicknames have already been revealed: Aaron Judge ("ALL RISE"), Todd Frazier ("TODDFATHER"), Aroldis Chapman ("THE MISSILE") and Sonny Gray ("PICKLES").

Souvenir jerseys and t-shirts featuring Yankees' names remains a hot-button issue among fans, with many old-school purists crying foul over this impending breach in convention. But they'll have to endure the new-look threads for just three days, as MLB celebrates the flair of its biggest stars, and allows them an opportunity to show off their creativity.

The MLB Players Association issued a release on Wednesday announcing details of the weekend's festivities, including the splashy new nickname policy: "Players will wear customized gear and colorful, non-traditional uniforms inspired by youth league uniforms during the three-day event, which was conceived as a way to allow players and young fans to connect through the sharing of their interests and cultures while bringing attention to causes they support."

"'This will be an exciting and unique opportunity for the players to literally wear their passions on their sleeves, and equipment, too, as they embrace this chance to let their true identities shine,'" said MLBPA Executive Director Tony Clark.

CC Sabathia was selected as a Players Weekend Ambassador, after he played a central role in the conceptualization of the inaugural event. The custom jerseys will ultimately be auctioned off for charity, with 100 percent of the proceeds going towards the MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation.

"Any time you can benefit and help people out in any way, that's what we're here for, to inspire people and help people out," Yankees slugger Aaron Judge told MLB.com's Mark Newman. "We're all blessed to be in this situation to play Major League Baseball. Anything we can do is pretty rewarding."

While it'll be a strange sight in the Bronx to see the Yankees trot out with named jerseys for the first time in franchise history, Players Weekend is sure to bring new eyes to the sport while raising money for a worthy cause.
