Leading the American League in wins, the 27-15 Yankees have started this season by winning 10 of their first 13 series for the fifth time in MLB’s Expansion Era, which dates back to 1961. The Yanks hit a season-high five home runs in Sunday’s win at Tampa Bay, something they did not do in all of 2023. Jose Trevino hit two of those homers, giving him the second multi-homer game of his career. Anthony Volpe is batting .333 during a six-game hitting streak. Aaron Judge has gone deep four times in his last seven games and has a .393 batting average over his last eight. Jon Berti is 6-for-19 with a couple of stolen bases in six games since returning from the injured list. Jahmai Jones hit his first career homer Sunday. Juan Soto continues to lead the American League in OBP with a mark of .414 while also leading the Yankees with a .314 average and 34 RBI. Luke Weaver has thrown 15 1/3 scoreless innings over his last nine appearances. Clay Holmes is up to 17.1 IP on the season and is the only pitcher in the Majors to have thrown that many innings without allowing an earned run. Happy anniversary to Dwight Gooden, who authored his unforgettable no-hitter against the Mariners on this date exactly 28 years ago, on May 14, 1996.

It is not uncommon for one team to fare well against another for a lengthy period of time, but the Yankees’ current dominance over Minnesota stretches back over two decades. Since 2002, the Yanks are 117-44 against the Twins including postseason play. It is easily the best record for any team against another specific opponent that is in their league and consider this as well: New York’s winning percentage versus Minnesota during this time is .727 over 161 games. The legendary 1998 Yankees had a regular season record of 114-48, which works out to a .704 win percentage. Against Minnesota over the past 22 years, the Yanks have performed at a level commensurate with one of the greatest teams in baseball history.

Minnesota has gone an MLB-best 17-3 since April 22. Outfielders Trevor Larnach and Max Kepler have the highest batting averages on the team; Larnach is batting .328 in 64 AB while Kepler, who takes a 14-game hitting streak into this series, is at .325 through 83 AB. Ryan Jeffers leads the team in home runs with nine and RBIs with 30 in addition to his .292 average. Carlos Santana has homered in each of his last three games. Key members of the Twins on the injured list right now include outfielder Byron Buxton (right knee inflammation) and third baseman Royce Lewis (right quad strain). Closer Jhoan Duran has converted all three of his save chances and has thrown seven scoreless innings since making his season debut April 30 following his recovery from a right oblique strain.

Coming off a quality start against Houston, Carlos Rodón will take the ball in Tuesday’s series opener against Chris Paddack, who has won each of his last four starts, three of which were either scoreless or one-run outings. Marcus Stroman is scheduled to toe the rubber tomorrow night opposite Pablo López – in his last two starts combined, López allowed two runs in 12 1/3 innings. Clarke Schmidt will try to build off 6 2/3 shutout innings against the Rays in his last start, the longest scoreless performance of his career and an effort that matched his longest overall, when he takes the mound Thursday. Minnesota is slated to counter with Joe Ryan, who has gone at least six innings in six out of his eight starts including a seven inning, one-run performance Friday in Toronto.
