Pinstriped Pulse
After taking three out of four games in Kansas City, the Yankees enter Boston with an MLB-best record of 49-22 and they hold a lead of 2.5 games atop the American League East over the second-place Orioles, who will visit the Bronx next week. By swatting seven home runs during their series against the Royals, the Yanks are up to 105 homers this season, two behind Baltimore for the most in the Majors – the Dodgers are the only other team that even has 90. Aaron Judge is batting .442 with seven homers over his last 12 games. Juan Soto went 4-for-11 in KC after missing the Yanks’ previous series due to left forearm inflammation. Ron Marinaccio’s 2.1 innings of work Tuesday marked his first MLB appearance since May 9. Michael Tonkin’s scoreless appearance the night before dropped his ERA as a Yankee down to 0.89 over 20.1 innings.
How ‘Bout That
Does it feel like the Yankees score in the first inning of almost every game? So far this year, the Yanks have plated a run during the first in 39.4 percent of their games. It’s a healthy number and the greatest argument possible to remind you not to be late to the action when you’re watching games on YES and the YES App! The Yanks’ all-time record for highest percentage of first innings scored in through the first 71 team games of a season is shared by their 1930 and 1933 clubs, which both pushed at least one run across in the first 54.9 percent of the time.
Know The Foe
The 35-34 Red Sox are just two games out of a Wild Card spot in the AL. Rafael Devers has a team-high 13 home runs, one ahead of Tyler O’Neill. Connor Wong has the highest batting average on the club at .329 through 173 at-bats, followed by ex-Yankee Rob Refsnyder and his .325 mark over 123 at-bats. Ceddanne Rafaela is tops on the squad with 37 RBI. Jarren Duran is fourth in the AL with 35 extra-base hits including an MLB-high 10 triples, three ahead of tied-for-second-place Anthony Volpe and Bobby Witt Jr. Duran is also batting .370 this month. Boston is fourth in the AL this season with a 3.46 bullpen ERA, a category in which the Yankees, at 3.11, are in second place behind Cleveland (2.33). Closer Kenley Jansen has converted 10 of his 11 save opportunities. Despite being in the thick of the Wild Card picture, Boston is 13.0 games behind the AL East-leading Yanks.
Probable Pitchers
Luis Gil will try to continue his remarkable rookie season this evening when he takes the mound opposite Brayan Bello. With an ERA of 2.04, Gil ranks second in the AL, trailing only the 1.92 mark of Detroit’s Tarik Skubal. Marcus Stroman ranks eighth at 2.82 followed by Carlos Rodón at 2.93, and they too are lined up to pitch in this series – Rodón is scheduled to start tomorrow against Cooper Criswell, a 27-year-old who has not faced the Yankees in any of his previous 23 MLB appearances, and Stroman is set to oppose Kutter Crawford in Sunday night’s finale.
