Pinstriped Pulse

After being acquired from Miami on Saturday, former All-Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. made his Yankees debut in Sunday’s 8-2 win over the Red Sox. He played center field, one of three positions he has started at throughout his MLB career, along with second base and shortstop, and there are plans for Chisholm Jr. to play third base for the Yanks. Aaron Judge reached base a career-high six times in Saturday’s wild 11-8 extra-inning victory at Fenway Park. With a .314 batting average plus MLB-leading totals of 37 home runs, 96 RBI and an OPS of 1.130, Judge continues to stand as a favorite to win the American League MVP Award. Juan Soto is batting .405 with four home runs in 37 at-bats since the All-Star break. Austin Wells has a .458 average over his last six starts. From July 5-28, Gleyber Torres has a .327 average while hitting safely in 13 of 15 games. Alex Verdugo went 7-for-15 with three doubles during the Yankees’ weekend series in Boston. Carlos Rodón has won his last two starts while giving up just three runs in 13.1 innings and striking out 17 batters. Jake Cousins has a .161 batting average out of the bullpen this year. Out since late June with a left hamstring strain, Giancarlo Stanton is expected to return to the Yankees lineup Monday.

How ‘Bout That

Growing up, the 26-year-old Chisholm Jr. learned baseball from his maternal grandmother, Patricia Coakley, who began doing soft toss with Jazz when he was only two years old! Patricia played shortstop for the Bahamian national softball team in the 1980's and did not retire until after her 60th birthday. She started a baseball academy for boys in the Bahamas in 1985.

Know The Foes

At 65-40, the Phillies have the best record in MLB and hold an 8.5-game lead atop the National League East over second-place Atlanta. Bryce Harper leads the Phillies with 24 home runs and 67 RBI while batting .285. Kyle Schwarber’s 22 homers and 63 RBI rank second to Harper in both categories. Trea Turner is batting .309 in 33 games since returning from a month-and-a-half absence caused by a left hamstring strain. Bryson Stott ranks sixth in the NL with 23 stolen bases, one more than Chisholm Jr. tallied with Miami before he was dealt to the Yankees. The 49-56 Blue Jays, who have traded off several pieces lately, are 7.5 games out of a Wild Card spot and 13 games out of first place in the AL East. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is on fire, batting .472 with six home runs during a 10-game hitting streak. Spencer Horwitz is batting .291, leading all MLB rookies who have had at least 120 at-bats this season.

Probable Starters

Luis Gil gets the call for the Yankees tonight after posting an ERA of 1.53 in 17.2 IP over his last three starts. He’ll work opposite Zack Wheeler, whose 2.55 season ERA ranks second in the NL, trailing only the 2.06 mark of Atlanta’s Reynaldo López. Gerrit Cole and Aaron Nola are lined up to work tomorrow’s game. Nestor Cortes and Cristopher Sánchez are scheduled to start Wednesday’s finale. Pitching matchups for the Yankees’ next series against Toronto have yet to be announced.

Trade Deadline Coverage

Tomorrow is a big day on the MLB calendar! The trade deadline will pass at 6 p.m., so there’s not much time left for clubs to make deals to achieve their goals, whether they want to try and make a playoff run this year of if they are building for the future. In order to break down everything that happens around the Majors, the Yankees Pregame Show on YES and the YES App will start at 5:30 p.m., allowing our team to bring you analysis and reaction as soon as it’s time for teams to put their pencils down.

Soccer at the Stadium

While the Yankees were in Boston this past weekend, Yankee Stadium hosted a celebration of soccer that included a preseason friendly between two of the most famous clubs in the sport! Reigning UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA World Club Cup, Premier League and FA Cup champions Manchester City faced seven-time European Cup champions AC Milan. It was part of the FC Series, a showcase for international soccer clubs across the U.S., and the match was presented in conjunction with Soccer Champions Tour, whose partners include Legends and AEG. You can watch the action Wednesday at 10 p.m. on YES and the YES App.
