Earlier today, the Yankees claimed RHP Michael Tonkin off waivers from the New York Mets.
Tonkin, 34, has gone 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA (9.0IP, 10H, 12R/6ER, 4BB, 11K, 1HR) in six combined relief appearances this season with the New York Mets and the Minnesota Twins. He made the Mets’ 2024 Opening Day roster before being acquired by the Twins on April 9 in exchange for cash considerations. Tonkin was re-acquired by New York-NL on April 17, claiming him off waivers from Minnesota before being designated for assignment on April 22.
Over parts of seven Major League seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2013-17, ’24), Atlanta Braves (2023) and New York Mets (2024), Tonkin has gone 11-8 with one save and a 4.44 ERA (235.1IP, 229H, 142R/116ER, 81BB, 235K, 39HR) in 192 career relief appearances. Over the last two seasons (2023-24), his 27 relief outings of at least 2.0-or-more innings are the most in the Majors in that span.
In 2023 with the Atlanta Braves, Tonkin went 7-3 with one save and a 4.28 ERA (80.0IP, 64H, 41R/38ER, 23BB, 75K, 13HR) in 45 relief appearances. His 80.0 innings pitched marked a career high, while his 45 relief appearances and 75 strikeouts were the second-highest totals in his career.
The Glendale, Calif., native was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 30th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. Tonkin did not pitch in the Majors from 2018-22, pitching in Japan for the Nippon Ham Fighters in Nippon Professional Baseball in 2018, the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (Independent) in 2019 and 2021, and the Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League in 2021. He pitched the entire 2022 season for Triple-A Gwinnett in the Atlanta Braves organization and signed a Major League contract with Atlanta for the 2023 season. Tonkin then signed a Major League contract for the 2024 season with New York-NL on Dec. 6, 2023.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have designated RHP McKinley Moore for assignment.
