The Yankees claimed OF Bubba Thompson off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.
Thompson, 25, batted .170 (9-for-53) with 10R, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 4RBI, 4BB and 4SB in 37 games with the Texas Rangers in 2023. He also appeared with Texas’ Triple-A Round Rock and the Kansas City Royals’ Triple-A Omaha last season, combining to hit .259 (69-for-266) with 49R, 14 doubles, 2 triples, 6HR, 34RBI, 27BB and 27SB in 65 games.
Over parts of two Major League seasons with Texas (2022-23), the outfielder has hit .242 (54-for-223) with 28R, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 1HR, 13RBI, 11BB and 22SB in 92 career games. Thompson has appeared defensively at all three outfield positions in his career, playing 61 games (45 starts) in left field, 15 games (10 starts) in right field and 11 games (10 starts) in centerfield.
The Jacksonville, Fla., native was originally selected by Texas in the first round (26th overall) of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft. Thompson was claimed off waivers by Kansas City from Texas on Aug. 13, 2023 and claimed off waivers by Cincinnati from Kansas City on Oct. 26, 2023.
