New York Yankees catcher Jose Trevino's 2023 season is over after suffering a right wrist tear which will require surgery.

The Yankees placed Trevino on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 18) prior to Friday's series opener against Kansas City, and recalled catcher Ben Rortvedt from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Trevino expects to be back for the start of the 2024 season.

According to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch, Trevino's wrist discomfort began back in spring training. "He thought he could play through the pain, but it has reached a point where he needs to get it fixed," Hoch reported.

Trevino, 30, played in 55 games for the Bombers this season, slashing .210/.257/.312 with four home runs and 15 RBI.

"It’s very frustrating. I want to be out there," Trevino told reporters.

A first-time All-Star and Gold Glove Award winner a season ago, Trevino has relished his opportunity with the Yankees after landing with the club in a trade from the Texas Rangers back on April 2, 2022.

"I love to catch, I love to wear the pinstripes," Trevino said. "There’s nothing more than I want to do than go out there and play, but at this point, I’m not helping anybody."
